A Wintery Walk to Tarn Hows

More information on the area at www.nationaltrust.org.uk

The first cold spell of the year, so we decided to stay low down and head up to Tarn Hows. We headed up through Monk Coniston woods to High Cross.

Leaving the village we looked back at the fells. Not a lot of snowy, but very cold!

It took me ages to arrange them sheep!

The view from High Cross. Very icy underfoot.

Wharton Tarn at High Cross

From High Cross we headed west towards The Tarns. The original name for Tarn Hows is 'The Tarns' and is often used locally. The original name comes from the fact that there were originally three small tarns at the site and the land owner James Marshall had a small dam built and thus created Tarn Hows, one tarn out of three small ones.

The views from above the tarn are quite extensive. This is looking out towards Fairfield to the north.

To the west we look out towards Langdale Pikes.

A classic, if wintery view of Tarn Hows.
